About this Painting

My cousin lives in Eynsford, Kent and we visit every year, usually during the Christmas holidays, for a family reunion.  We always have a wonderful time and eat very well!   After a particularly good lunch in 2009, we went for a walk around the village and I took a number of photographs.  The late afternoon light was fantastic, casting long shadows and was particularly interesting around the ford and 17th century bridge over the River Darent, which are the subjects of this painting.

Eynsford was first documented in 864 and has three renowned sites: Eynsford Castle, Lullingstone Castle and a Roman villa.  John Wesley is believed to have preached in Eynsford and the Wesley Stone near to the bridge commemorates the event.  The Norman church in the background is dedicated to St. Martin and was the centre of an historic dispute between William de Eynsford and Thomas Becket.  The old mill that straddles the river has an unusual, corrugated barrel roof.

Once again, my favourite dog, Oscar, has crept into the picture, showing a keen interest in the three swans.
