This painting of Valletta, Malta is the view from Fort Tigne in Sliema and was commissioned by an existing client. Malta is one of my favourite Mediterranean islands and my wife and I visited there in 2011.
The Valletta skyline is dominated by the silver dome of the Carmelite Church and the adjacent 60 metre spire of the Anglican Cathedral of St. Paul. In this painting the buildings have taken on an orange glow cast by the setting sun and providing a wonderful contrast with the darkening sky.
In the foreground is a traditional water taxi boat known as ‘dghajsa' that provides cruises in and around the Grand Harbour, as well as crossings between Valletta and the historic towns of Senglea and Vittoriosa. Cruising in front of the cathedral is a Luzzu harbour tour boat painted in traditional Maltese colours. A harbour cruise was one of the highlights of our trip to Malta and is highly recommended to anyone visiting the island.
* Prices in US Dollars and Euros are those used by the artist but may vary depending upon the prevailing exchange rates and the method of payment.
** A Studio Proof canvas print is a giclée print on canvas that is hand-embellished by the artist using the same medium as the original painting (usually acrylic), signed, numbered and then coated in 3 layers of UV-resistant varnish. It is then mounted on stretchers ready for framing.
*** Giclée printing is an advanced form of ink jet printing that applies a wide range of coloured inks that are designed to be light-fast for at least 75 years.
