In 2007 I visited Barrington Court, a National Trust property near Ilminster in Somerset with my wife and some friends. It was a beautiful August day and the flowers were at their best. The elegant formal gardens were influenced by the garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and are laid out in a series of “rooms”. In the part of the garden shown in this painting, I was impressed by the sheer range of colours and density of the blooms. I just had to paint it.
I have produced two versions of this picture; one with my two friends in it and one without. This is the digitally altered one without my friends.
