In 2002 I took my wife to Venice during April for her 50th Birthday.  We bought a one week waterbus pass and had a wonderful few days touring the city and soaking up the culture.  Within the Venetian lagoon, there are a number of islands.  One of these is Burano, which is a 40 minute boat trip from Venice.   It has a totally different atmosphere from Venice's historic centre, thanks to the Buranese custom of painting houses in bright colours -- a tradition that may have had its origins in the colour schemes of local fishing boats.

This scene is taken from in front of the Chiesa di San Martino looking down Fondamenta di Terranova.  Since our visit, several of the houses have been repainted in different colours, notably the brick one on the left, which has been rendered and painted a rich blue.

** A Studio Proof canvas print is a giclée print on canvas that is hand-embellished by the artist using the same medium as the original painting (usually acrylic), signed, numbered and then coated in 3 layers of UV-resistant varnish. It is then mounted on stretchers ready for framing.

*** Giclée printing is an advanced form of ink jet printing that applies a wide range of coloured inks that are designed to be light-fast for at least 75 years.
