In 2011 my wife and I took a vacation in France and based ourselves at a beautiful spot in Connelles on the River Seine. We toured the area, including a visit to Monet’s iconic garden at Giverny. We were blessed by beautiful weather.
This painting shows part of the huge upper garden. As we explored the numerous pathways, we bumped into Monte Don, who was filming an episode of BBC2’s Gardeners’ World. As it was mid-May, the garden was awash with colour with the irises and peonies in full bloom. It was truly breathtaking and I knew that I had to paint it.

** A Studio Proof canvas print is a giclée print on canvas that is hand-embellished by the artist using the same medium as the original painting (usually acrylic), signed, numbered and then coated in 3 layers of UV-resistant varnish. It is then mounted on stretchers ready for framing.
*** Giclée printing is an advanced form of ink jet printing that applies a wide range of coloured inks that are designed to be light-fast for at least 75 years.
